Long Run Saturday Night

We have gone to the dark side. There is something nice about starting a run in the darkness and seeing the sun rise, but we are too darn tired to do it anymore. Tonight we start off with a sliver of a moon and 1 star to guide us.

Running on the path beside the perimeter highway.  Nicole is exhausted  and isn't sure how she if feeling about a long run for tonight.  Originally she wanted to run Harts Trail and I know she needs this run as much as I do. I tell her this is our survival run and we have to do it or else we will die.  She doesn't question me.  Maybe we are both insane.  I  don't flinch as 3 semi trucks fly by.  All it would take is a little slip on the icy roads and......never mind.

We arrive at the end of  Dale Street and see nothing but blackness speckled with a few stars.  We fumble about for our lights which will be needed for the trail  and quickly catch a chill doing so.  This is a bit of an omen.  We dressed for -20 but it felt colder when we stopped. Our bodies are cold but our feet are toasty.  Nicole is wearing her mukluks and I am wearing  beyond-throw-in-the-garbage running shoes with a few hot shots stuffed at the ends.  Nothing like a chill to keep you from dilly dallying.  I quickly put the camera away as we start the trail portion of the run. We quickly warm up again.  Whew.

The pictures taken on the trail turned out completely black. Our headlamps lit up the trees immediately on either side of us and a bit of the path in front. Occasionally I would see a a car light in the distance and the way it threw the light made me think we were running to the light...the light at the end of the tunnel and all that.

Eventually we leave the trail and turn onto Grant Avenue to head back towards home. This is when the wind slaps us in the face and doesn't let up for the remainder of the run.  We are quite chilled after 45 minutes of running head on into the wind.  I begin to wonder how I could be so stupid to leave the house with only a thin pair of gloves. My hands are beyond cold. We start to plan on sharing a glass of red wine for the last  bit of our run...just to warm up.  To take our mind off Nicole's sore legs and my freezing hands we count our steps by the 100s.  It takes 500 hundred steps to get to the wine.

Thats how we ended up at Smitty's Lounge  on a saturday night. After thawing out we realized we were quite famished. Nicole got us a glass of wine as I prepared our post run snack of majool dates, homemade granola, and pepperoni sticks.  What, does this sound disgusting?  It went great with the wine.   I think the bar staff took pity on us because they let us eat our own food without saying a word.  I decided to get us one more glass of wine to share before finishing up our last 1 1/2 miles home but the bartender told me it was cheaper to buy a carafe.  The result of this economical decision was running home a bit tipsy...in the cold...in wet clothing.

We survived and that deserved a bit of celebrating.  Tonight's running time: 2 hrs 53 min. Next Saturday we run for 4 hours.

Long Run Sunday (not really) Sept 18/11

We're going to meet 6 am at Timmies by Unicity, NOT Westwood and Portage.  We only have an hour to run  so it'll be short and sweet.  Bring your rain stuff, just in case.

September 4 Long Run

We'll meet at 5:00 am at Timmies at Westwood & Portage.  Sorry about the early time but I am presently watching Running the Sahara and figure if those guys can get out at that hour every day for 90 days then so can we (for tomorrow, not every day.  Puh-lease)! We're aiming for 19- 20 km with a quick coffee stop in the middle.

Here is a little teaser of the movie.

See you tomorrow!

See you tomorrow!

Summer and long run sundays, May 29th

So here we have arrived at another week gone by and another Sunday morning is upon us. It seems that spring has arrived and with it our summer schedules. The awesome weather keeps our families busy after the long winter.

This week we all have a bit different plans for the morning run and will each be doing a different distance at a different time. I find it more motivating to get out there for the long runs when there is someone else to run with, especially for a 4-5 hour run. It keeps me from hearing that voice in my head that's trying to tell me I'm tired, or sore. I like to think that when I hear that someone else is tired and sore I can be a positive voice, one that (after my own whining of course) can spur us onward to finish the goal for the day. But tomorrow is something else.

My husband and I grew up in military families. Yes, we are base brats! 3 years ago I ran a personal best in the inaugural Air Force Run here in Winnipeg. (2:32) I had a great fellow who paced me along and got me in. I so enjoyed the run and of course both my husband and myself support our military and the awesome work they do. Last year it was Bobs' turn to run this race in support, and he enjoyed this run as well. This year we are happy to again support the run and I'm excited for it to be my turn again.

I don't usually run with goals in mind, not the sort I find I hear allot about from other runners. There usually isn't a time I want to beat, I've been trying to get under a 2:30 half marathon time for 4 years now and just finally conquered that this May 1st in the police half. Now I would like to see if that was a fluke, or could I do it again? I mostly run with the goal of 'some thing under 2:45 would be nice... ' Because this goal has been out of reach for so long I decided to focus on the distance instead. So tomorrow I am excited to put a little pressure on myself, try to keep a steady pace, and try again to run for a time goal of under 2:30 for the half marathon. There! I've said it out loud and now I'm committed (or I may be after the run tomorrow)......

Have a fantastic week running!

Nicole

Don't forget to enjoy the moments we meet along our way.

Maybe a 50km weekend?

This weekend we have decided to change things up. This was the weekend we have been training for, our first 50km finish. Unfortunately the park is flooded out and this run has been postponed until August 20th. (I will have to wait for my first official 50km finish until then…). I think there is a lesson in here about patience, training, and recognizing my actual readiness (not just what I perceive in my mind). This lesson will be closer studied after this weekend.

Because of the postponement we have decided that we would like to tackle this distance on our own. Bob and I are running this distance on Saturday as we had a sitter booked (she booked the day off work for us), and so we decided that it would be nice to run together seeing as we have the opportunity. This is not something we are able to do often as sitters get expensive after a while, and they are busy as well with their teenage lives.

This is something I am looking forward to. Bob and I don’t often get to spend this kind of alone time together. So many things are going through my mind; it’s like a first date again. How long until he runs off and I can’t keep up anymore? For any of you who know my husband you know how he shoots out at the start, I’ll be glad there’s no one counting down. Will he be able to run as slowly as I? If not, will I be able to catch up around 17-24 mile mark? (Almost happened once) Oh well, I’m not 17 anymore (far cry from that, thank the good Lord) so I know that these things don’t really matter, I’m going to enjoy tomorrows run for as long as it goes. (He has promised not to run to far off on me; it isn’t a race or anything)

It’s funny how we get caught up in our lives and it’s these little things that we can appreciate, getting to go on a long run with my husband. I am becoming more grateful for the postponement (not the flood), as I wouldn’t have had the chance to spend such a great amount of my day uninterrupted with my awesome husband. Of course our children are a welcomed interruption into our lives; it will be nice to spend a day together.

Back to packing; I wonder what I’ll be able to fill my bag with for this 50km run. (Camera for sure, snacks, water, more water...)

Have a spectacular weekend…. See you Sunday.

A new milage, Good Friday's activities

A sign along our route we found interesting,

located between homes by the side of the road.

We aren't in Winnipeg anymore!

After a miss print one week a few months back, writing about running to Oak Hammock Marsh, when a close friend corrected the statement and pointed out that it was Fort Whyte we ran to; it became a goal to run out to Oak Hammock Marsh. It has been our longest distance so far, a 28+ miles. Very close to the 50km we hope to successfully run May 14th at the Manitoba trail run in Spruce woods. But this would be getting ahead of myself…..

4am, sitting at Tim Horton’s sucking back a coffee, not for enjoyment, but it seems a necessity at this point in the morning. Then finding out that breakfast doesn’t start until 5am! Did anyone else know this? I was sort of astounded to find out that at 4am, there are NO breakfast sandwiches available! So a muffin had to suffice for the first while. We both arrived a bit late, which was very nice to get in a coffee and muffin before hitting the road, and headed to find another Tim’s 6 miles away, where we would arrive after 5am so we could fuel with the expected breakfast sandwich (finally).

Being more properly fueled (mmmm) we hit the hill! Garbage hill looks a bit different at 6 in the morning. We were also surprised to see someone out walking their dog at this hour on a holiday, nice to know we aren’t the only crazy people out and about. Having joined a clinic at City Park Runners, Tuesday nights I have spent learning to run hills. I’m not yet sure I’m ready to admit this to everyone out there but…….. I have really enjoyed learning more about running hills, running up this thing, or maybe it’s the downhill….. Definitely the downhill! I get a bit of speed built up on the downs and just love the fact that I feel like I can actually keep up with others on a down. I’m not a fast runner at all, but a downhill lets me look like I run.

At this time of the morning we have decided that we are not too worried about our route as it is 6-8am on a holiday and we don’t expect any other questionable characters out and about with us on the road. (keep in mind I would have no idea what a questionable character would look like) Up Notre Dame, down McPhillips and out to Leila, where we find another bathroom break. This is the last known bathroom break we have on our route, and once we hit pipeline road, we don’t know what will be out there for the second half of this run. (Insert music from ‘twilight zone’ here)

We have been packing a lot of things for many of our runs up to this point, mostly food, extra clothing, and water. At this point we had discussed leaving a lot of stuffs behind, get some basics and run with that. So in my pack I filled the platypus with an electrolyte replacement drink, had a container of grapes, half a roll of bathroom tissue (could be needed!), headlamp, extra grocery bag (I’m not sure why either, but it was there), wallet, phone, house keys, pen, band-aids, hand sanitizer, extra shell(looked like rain), extra leggings (in case of getting too cold),contact case and rinse, sunglasses (ever the optimist?), and some gels just in case. This was a nice light load for a change. No I’m not kidding! I think it may stem from reading about a race where there were not enough supplies along the route for the runners who are in the California mountains, running along a 100 mile trail, and a few having to DNF about halfway, because not only one but several stations along the way ran out of water and the rest of their supplies. I know we are nowhere near running this kind of a distance at this point, but it is nice to know that we wouldn’t have to worry about?????? Not sure yet, but maybe we won’t have to if we keep this up. Although, after the lesson learned at the Polar Bear run across Lake Winnipeg this year, when I’m running in a planned event I think I will try and trust the RD’s and rely on their providing along the way. I must have some trust issues?

Pipeline road took us out quite a ways and we were able to see farm lands as we went. Everything was very wet, but we were also hopeful because the flooding was not as bad as we had imagined it might be. Along the way we were greeted by several dogs. This is a bit unnerving, I think I may prefer to run by someone disheveled looking in the city than try to run (walk) by a barking dog who’s NOT leashed and their owner is nowhere around! There was one owner who corralled his dog, then let him go again, only to stand back and call to him. I was a bit concerned about this one as I was unsure what would happen if the dog charged us, but it ended alright as we passed and he decided that we were no threat to his person and he ignored us. There was another dog protecting his land a bit later, he paced back and forth along his property, barked a few times and kept us under watch, but never left his land. Then a little while later we met two retrievers’ who had a really close look at us as they checked us out from their property line, but then came out to give us a good sniff. This was unsettling, one dog had his tail wagging, which made me feel a bit safer but the other wasn’t so sure and kept looking at us to make sure we didn’t do anything to his friend as we were sniffed up close. Through all these dogs, we slowed to a walk as to not give them a chase, but we were really unsure what else to do. There was a time that I had learned a bit of self defense but as I scrolled through the very short amount of knowledge in my head there was really nothing I found that would be useful here. (Not that I am quick enough to use anything I’ve learned anyways)

It was interesting to see and follow a map; some roads look longer than others you know. It was nice to get to the road where we found our last 11 miles lay in front of us, route 220 black dale road, straight ahead. After a while on this road I found myself wondering if I had taken the right turn, thinking that we should be seeing more signs for our destination, forgetting that I have plotted this route to avoid traffic on a busy highway. Only to find ourselves at intersections with a large sign for our destination, another 100 yards or so up from here and we see a sign for a ‘Manitoba Attraction’ 3km away. Along with a cool ‘wildlife crossing’ sign, at this point we were having some excitement about almost being there.

We finally arrived at the sign to mark our occasion of making it. We did finally run to Oak Hammock Marsh. 28+ miles, and we were in hysterics to realize that it was probably another half mile to get to the actual building up the road. So up the road we went, and when our ride drove by we waved him on to meet us at the very end.

Of course we finished with a lunch celebration, but when the food came we devoured it too quickly to get a picture to insert here. I need to say a huge thank you to our husbands and kids who put up with our insanity, and for driving out to get us on our one way journeys.

My lesson learned:
We can only be a successful as our support. Without my family I would not be able to accomplish all that I am; and I would not have the potential to be what I will grow to become.

Long Run Sunday April 3/11

Some of our runners are crawling out of the woodwork now that the weather is warming up.  It will be nice to run with a larger group again.  Welcome back! T asked to set trail so it will be fun to see what she comes up with.  Will probably do loops to accommodate those who want to run a shorter distance.  Nicole tells me a new barefoot runner may also be joining us and we look forward to hearing about his running experiences .  Meeting at 6 am ( We ditched the 5 am time so as not to scare anyone away)  at Timmies on Westwood and Portage.  See you tomorrow!

Sunday Run Review

The winter has been brutally cold and most of our runners have been hibernating so it was a pleasant surprise to see a new face waiting for us at Timmies.  Christine drove across the city to run with us  at 6 a.m. in -28C (!) weather.  We learned  her longest distance to date has been 13.1 miles and that  her next goal is to run a marathon. When I looked at Nicole I could tell she was thinking the same thing...to take this girl to her longest distance yet and show her some  sights at the same time.  14 miles sounded like a nice distance.  Realizing I hadn't eaten breakfast or had anything to drink before leaving the house, I immediately downed a small coffee,  2 grapes with a piece of cheese out of Nicole's pack  before heading out.

40 minutes into the run  we arrived at Assiniboine Forest.  It is  unique to find a forest in the middle of a city and we always enjoy running through here  especially when the sun is coming up.  This day, however,  was overcast which made the temperature seem even colder. It didn't seem to effect our collective mood  as we were enjoying getting to know Christine and hearing about her running life.

We continued on to FWC. It was the turn around point but first we wanted to show Christine the tipis.  She had been here before but not for many years.

Attempted to get a good picture of the bison  but my fingers were freezing trying to work the camera so we moved on.....

I was starting to think about how good it felt to be out on a decent run.  So good that I started to think of next week's race.  The crazy race.  Across lake Winnipeg.... that I haven't trained for.  Maybe this sign is an omen to not be stupid.  You just can't run 17 miles across a lake  without training properly.   When I descended the tree house N &  C were gone.  I felt bad realizing they must have been freezing waiting for me.  I took a wrong turn 40  seconds into the run to catch up.  That is a record but I quickly  turned myself around and we were united again.  We were all starting to feel the bite running in the wide open prairie.  You have to be careful when stopping in this temperature.

We took a detour though Assiniboine  park on the way home.    Feeling really good but we were ready to get back.

The results are:
Christine ran her first 15.2 miles!
Nicole  almost 17 miles
Gail 16.2 miles.

Thanks Christine for coming out and we hope to see you again!

IS IT SUNDAY ALREADY?

Ok.  Meeting at 6 am march 6th  at Timmies Westwood and Portage.  Haven't even talked with anyone this week so not sure if anyone is going to show up.  Route?  Distance?  who knows!   Seriously, I need a goal.

PS:  Next week I will have one.

Sunday Run Feb 13/11

We'll meet at 5:30 am ( you know where)  and do 10 miles, even if it kills us.  The start is a little bit earlier than usual as Nicole & Bob have to be at their Zem table at the Forks bright and early.  Don't forget to stop by to say hello to them if you are in the area.  Sweet Dreams and see you in the morning!

PS:  Seems the whining from last week's post did some good.  Been out every day this week ...running, biking, and strength training.  This girl is clawing her way back.    After 10 miles tomorrow she will  officially be back.  Woot woot!

LONG RUN FEB 6/11

I say long run sheepishly because we'll likely only do about 6 miles. Meet at 6 am Timmies at Westwood and Portage. Don't worry, we'll get back up to the big mileage shortly.

...after writing the above I feel I may have left you wondering whats up with the wimpy mileage lately? Basically, we have been having some health issues. Nicole mentioned the latest one but even before that she had recently recovered from an arm infection which caused considerable pain that held her activity level back. I won't go into details because she doesn't even now I am writing about her health ( is that ok? Nicole? Hello?).  Amazingly, her motivation is intact even if her mileage isn't.

On my end,  it took a long time to get my running energy back since having pneumonia in October and now I am left with little motivation.  Now that it is said  I hope to face it and move forward.

Jan 15.2011 Sunday Long 'Run'

Meeting tomorrow at 6 am at Tims on Westwood and Portage. I'll be with bike as I have some new footwear to try out before the commute to work the next day.   Rumour has it Nicole might show up on a bike too.  The distance of tomorrow's run will depend on how far we can go before freezing our toes, but 22k would be awesome.

I  generally have a hard time keeping my feet warm in winter.  It may be because I chose to wear these shoes  30 years ago during  one winter and froze my toes.  I was cute and stylish  which  really is the only thing that matters when you are 13 and not very bright.
...which brings me back to the  winter bike footwear I will be testing out. They are rubber boots with scuba diving material on the inside that  fit loosely and claim to keep the feet warm to -32C.   With enough room to fit gortex socks followed by a thick pair of wool socks I'm hoping  those boots will keep my toes  comfortable to  - 40.  I would love to wear mukluks because they are the only thing that keep my toes toasty but the spiky pedal would shred the bottom.

Hope to see you tomorrow! We won;t leave the runners behind!
